Since 15 March, 2017, Association of Law Firms of Georgia (ALFG) has commenced with the implementation of the project - “Strengthening the Principles of Equality and Adversarial Process in Criminal Procedure and the Role of Attorneys in Justice System.” The project is funded within the scope of the project - “Promoting Rule of Law in Georgia” (PROLOG), executed by East-West Management Institute (EWMI). The project will be implemented within 10 months.
The project consists of two basic components. The first one aims at elaborating legislative amendments ensuring adversarial and equal criminal procedure. This part of the project will be managed by the ALFG criminal law expert and VBAT Partner – Davit Kvachantiradze. The second component is directed towards organizational development of ALFG, the arrangement of trainings for its members and the implementation of corporate ethical standards.
Significant legislative changes
"Under the amendments to the Georgian legislation, effective from 1st July, 2017, “the price in the offer or advertisement for realization of goods and/or provision of services by an entrepreneur in the territory of Georgia, shall indicated only in Lari, except for the cases stipulated under the relevant legislative act of the National Bank of Georgia.”
Association of Law Firms of Georgia, with the support of Open Society Georgia, has commenced the project “Elaboration of Recommendations to Ensure the Adversarial Principle in the Code of Criminal Procedure.” The project encompasses the research and analysis of Georgian entrapment cases throughout 2015-2016 years, as well as the study of the European Court of Human Rights’ case-law.
Presentation of new manual
Presentation of the manual "Obtaining Evidence by the Defense through the Court - 2014-2015 Assessment and recommendations" took place on June 28, 2016. The manual was published by the Association of law Firms of Georgia, with the support of the Foundation "Open Society Georgia". The authors of this manual are the VBAT Partner -Mr. David Kvachantiradze and the VBAT Associate - Mr. David Abesadze.
Commentary on the Criminal Procedure Code of Georgia
The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) in Georgia with the technical assistance and funding provided by Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs of the United States Department of State (INL) in 2015 published Commentary on the Criminal Procedure Code of Georgia, one of the co-authors of which is a partner of VBAT Mr. Davit Kvachantiradze.
